Kings Point, NY – The USMMA volleyball team ran away with a non-conference tilt against John Jay Tuesday night inside O'Hara Hall, dispatching of the Bloodhounds in straight sets. The Mariners racked up a monstrous 29 aces from the service line and finished the match with a .278 hitting percentage. Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) led the way for USMMA with nine aces, ten assists, and four kills on six swings.
Merchant Marine (3-1) came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage. The Mariners swung at a match high .421 clip in the opening frame. Candice Dunagan (Hamilton, MT) served out the set with one of her six aces of the night as USMMA finished the game by winning the final seven points to earn the 25-6 victory.
John Jay (0-2) stayed within striking distance early in the second set, pulling within two at 10-8 following a Martina Hot kill. However, the Mariners would engineer a 7-2 spurt that opened the gap to 17-10. It was again the service line that was the difference in the second set. USMMA notched 13 service aces in the middle game, including the last four points of the set on serves from Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX).
After losing the first two points of the third set the Mariners used an 11-2 surge to secure a comfortable cushion. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) posted a game high four kills as Merchant Marine tallied a match best 11 kills in the frame. USMMA closed out the set, 25-15, to finalize the 3-0 triumph, which is the Mariners third consecutive sweep.
