KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the United States Merchant Marine Academy dropped a league match to the Catholic University of America, 3-0, on the first day of the second Landmark Conference Round-Robin at Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y. With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 14-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Following the defeat, the Mariners dropped to 10-12 on the season and 0-4 in the Landmark.
Catholic 3, USMMA 0 (17-25, 27-29, 21-25)
For Kings Point, freshman middle hitter Michelle Daneu (Malabar, Fla.) led the way in kills with a match-high 13, while freshman outside hitter Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.) recorded nine. Senior setter Jenna Palaschak (Annandale, Va.) had 24 assists and senior libero Ana Fuschetto (Swink, Colo.) scooped up 17 digs.
For Catholic, sophomore outside hitters Katie Chefalas (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Claudia Jean (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior setter Michaela Carroll (Amityville, N.Y.) dished out a contest-best 34 assists, while sophomore libero Kristina Purcell (Springfield, Pa.) had a match-high 18 digs. Junior middle hitter Molly Owens (Floral Park, N.Y.) swatted three service aces.
Head Coach James Seitelman and the Mariners return to action tomorrow when they host Goucher College at 11 a.m. in the Liebertz Gymnasium. That match will be followed by USMMA vs. Susquehanna University at 1:30 p.m. as the Landmark Conference Round-Robin comes to a close.
