NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 16, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's track & field team came in sixth place out of 21 teams that scored at the two-day ECAC Division III Outdoor Championship Meet that wrapped up on Thursday up at Southern Connecticut State University. The Mariners scored 50 points as a team. Rutgers-Newark won with 132 points, while Keene State (66) and Hunter (65) rounded out the top-three.
Highlighting the event was junior Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) setting two new Academy records in both the 100m Prelims on Wednesday (13.24) and the 400m on Thursday (59.81). She was responsible for 16 team points throughout the meet for the Mariners – seven individual and nine relay.
USMMA had four top-three finishes, with freshman Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) leading the way with a second-place showing in the 5,000m with a new personal-best time of 19:19.59 to earn eight points, while classmate Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) came in third in the same event with a PR of 19:34.05 to earn six points.
Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) both had third-place finishes – as D'Arcy's 2:26.33 in the 800m earned six team points and Hunter's throw of 34.07m (111-09) in the discus also grabbed six points for the Mariners.
D'Arcy earned a team-best 18 points over the two days (nine individual and nine relay). She also had a sixth-place finish in the high jump [1.46m (4-09.50)] to grab three points, and was part of both the fourth-place (five-point) 4x100m relay team (53.56) as well as the fifth-place (four-point) 4x400m relay (4:21.25).
Vandermeer also came in fifth place in the 400m (59.81 – four points), seventh place in the long jump [4.85m (15-11.00) – two points] and eighth place in the 100m Finals (13.74 – one point), and was part of the 4x100m relay – along with D'Arcy and freshmen Breanna Frank (Sidney, Mont.) and Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) – and the 4x400m relay – along with D'Arcy, senior Kelsey Ramirez (Stevensville, Mich.) and Reddick.
Reddick and Ramirez also had sixth-place individual finishes – Reddick in the javelin with a toss of 34.08m (111-10) and Ramirez in the 800m with a time of 2:32.35, as they both earned three team points each.
