SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's indoor track and field team competed at the Susquehanna University Indoor Invitational in Selinsgrove, Pa. The highlight on the women's side was sophomore Tara Mulligan (Monroe, N.Y.) as she led the way with an Academy record and personal best distance in the weight throw. She placed seventh overall with a mark of 11.26 meters.
The other two Academy records came in the 4 x 200-meter and 4 x 400-meter relay events. In the former, the team of junior Lauren Rattan (Oklahoma City, Okla.), freshman Marie Morrow (Aurora, Colo.), senior Derien Jastrzebski (Lafayette, Colo.), and Mulligan dropped eight seconds of their best time of the year, running a 2:04.65.
The 4 x 400-meter relay foursome of Rattan, freshman Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.), Jastrzebski and senior Cristina Fernandez-O'Toole (Washington Depot, Conn.) dropped a full 10 seconds off their season best mark (4:54.55). The mark eclipsed a school record that stood for 18 years.
Rattan also shined individually with a personal best time in the 800-meter, placing fourth overall (2:30.54).
Jastrzebski, a heat winner, dropped a full second off her personal best in the 200-meter (31.58 seconds).
In the 5k, Fernandez-O'Toole ran a season best clocking, eclipsing the 23-minute barrier for the first time (22:58.38).
"What a day for the women's squad. I'm absolutely thrilled with their continuous improvements. The program is making great strides as they get ready for a big day at the Landmark Conference Championships in two weeks," Head Coach Gregory Lott said.
Kings Point returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Dickinson College to compete in the DuCharme Relays.
