Merchant Marine Defeats Goucher and Drew; Falls at Catholic

The USMMA women's swimming and diving team posted a 2-1 record in three Landmark Conference dual meets over the weekend.  The Mariners defeated Goucher and Drew on Saturday before narrowly falling to Catholic Sunday.  Nina Demet (Lake Forest, IL) was tabbed Mariner of the Meet after winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.47 seconds.

Merchant Marine picked up a 66-29 triumph over Goucher and knocked off Drew by a score of 59-36.  Catherine Don (Quincy, IL) out-toched the competition in the 200 freestyle, winning the event in 2:09.16.  Jacqueline White (Oradell, NJ) posted a decisive victory in the 100 butterfly as her season best time of 1:03.72 put her four seconds ahead of second-place.

"I was proud to see our team race well, cheer for each other, and never give up," said Head Coach Sean Tedesco.

USMMA swam well against Catholic but the Cardinals ultimately came away with the 110-81 decision.  The 200 medley relay team dropped one second off its season best to start the meet with a win.  White won two events, setting new season best times in both the 200 IM and the 200 backstroke.  Susanne Dannessa (Cleveland, OH) also shaved five seconds off her season best time in the 200 IM.

The Mariners dominated the 200 breaststroke, finishing 1-2-3.  Jolyn Green (Riverside, CA) notched a lifetime best of 2:33.19 to win the event.  Emily Boyson (Garland, TX) and Emily Olsen (Glenwood, NJ) finished second and third, respectively.

Merchant Marine is now 5-1 on the season, including a 2-1 mark in Landmark Conference action.  USMMA returns to action Tuesday night for a non-conference meet at home against St. Joseph's (LI).
