ROANOKE, Va. (March 8, 2019) – For the first time since the 2016 season, the USMMA wrestling team has produced an All-American! The Mariners actually boast two this year, as senior Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) and junior Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) both battled their way through Friday's opening-day action at the NCAA Championships.
Dial started his day with a big upset of the fourth-ranked wrestler in the 133-pound bracket, Brice Everson of Loras College, via a 4-0 decision. Three of his four points came in the second period, where he choose down and quickly got an escape. The senior then earned a takedown to extend his lead to 3-0, which was all he would need.
He lost is second bout in the main-bracket quarterfinals to Centennial Conference rival Joey Borai of Stevens by a narrow 3-2 decision, but rebounded in the wrestlebacks to defeat Springfield's Ian Tolotti in a nail-biting 2-1 decision to make it through Friday and earn All-American accolades.
Glantzman's first match was against the #7 seed at 184, Devon Pingel of Adrian College. He used a couple of near-fall points in the third period to claim a 7-1 decision and move on to the quarterfinals, where he lost to the #2 seed, Jake Ashcraft of Ithaca, by the same 7-1 score.
In the wresltebacks, Glantzman came out strong against Messiah's Victor DeFrance, earning eight points in the opening period on a takedown, a two-point near-fall and a four-point near-fall. He cruised to a 15-4 major decision to earn All-American distinction and join Dial in Saturday's action.
As a team, the Mariners have compiled 10 points, which is currently tied for 19th place in the nation.
Dial and Glantzman will battle towards a third-place finish in their respective brackets beginning tomorrow at 10 a.m. Dial will start the day with Bout #244 against TCNJ's Jake Giordano, while Glantzman will face Wisconsin-Whitewater's Nick Stencel in Bout #255.
