NORTHFIELD, Vt. (Jan. 26, 2019) – The USMMA wrestling team took part in the 25th Annual All-Academy Championships on Saturday, hosted this year by Norwich University. The Mariners placed seventh out of the eight teams competing (second among the three Division III teams). Navy won the tournament for the second-straight season with a total of 115.5 points, with Air Force placing second (99.5 points) and Army West Point rounding out the Top-3 (72.5 points).
Senior Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) scored two points for the Mariners with a win via an 8-0 major decision in his first-round matchup at 133 over a Division I wrestler from VMI, Cliff Conway. Dial lost his next two matches to D1 wrestlers, however, ending his day.
Dial and freshman Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished the tournament with Merchant Marine's only two victories.
Sims dropped his first-round match against Air Force's Jacoby Ward. He rebounded in the wrestlbacks with a 5-2 decision victory over host Norwich's Blaise Bressler, but was knocked out after his next match to Army's Owen Brown.
