KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2018) – The USMMA wrestling team had a phenomenal day at the Long Island Open on Saturday, coming in second place overall in the tournament. The Mariners tied for the tournament-high with 13 wrestlers that placed in the top-six, including three bracket winners. They scored a total of 198.5 points, just 3.5 points behind first-place #8 Baldwin Wallace.
The three Mariners who won their brackets were seniors Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) at 285 and Chad Puglio (Myerstown, Pa.) at 149 and freshman Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 174. Three other wrestlers came in second place – seniors Foster Wade (Camano Island, Wash.) at 197 and Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) at 133 and freshman Max Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 174.
Additionally, sophomores Jace Garza (Holland, Mich.) at 133 and Kieran Duggan (Woodbury, Conn.) at 165 placed third in their brackets, sophomore Rodman Rupp (Brick, N.J.) at 149 and freshman Austin Vincent (Stockton, Ill.) at 141 came in fourth place, juniors Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) at 197 and Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.) at 184 both had fifth-place showings and freshman Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.) place sixth at 174.
The Mariners also recorded 16 pins on the day, with Keil leading the team with three, and four others recording two apiece – Duggan, Dial, Puglio and Rupp. Bunce, Eposito, senior Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.), junior Kevin Dinh (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Gavin Bradley (Woodbury, Minn.) also had pins at the tourney.

The Mariners have completed the 2018 portion of their schedule and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the North-South Duals, where they will compete in numerous head-to-head duals, including the Centennial Conference-opener against the host Ursinus Bears.
