NEW YORK (Dec. 15, 2017) – The USMMA wrestling team lost a non-conference dual meet to New York University, 32-16, on the road on Friday at the famed New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. In defeat, the Mariners' dual record falls to 1-3 on the season, while the Violets improve to 5-3.
NYU opened the match with three-straight pins at 125, 133 and 141 to take an 18-0 lead. That was followed by back-to-back major decisions for the Violets at 149 and 157 to extend their advantage to 26-0.
Senior Travis Ahrens (Mims, Fla.) got Merchant Marine on the board with a 12-4 major decision at 165 to bring the score to 26-4 in favor of the hosts, but NYU earned a fall at 174 to go ahead 32-4.
The Mariners finished the match with three-straight victories by sophomore Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.), who earned a 7-4 decision at 184, junior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) with a forfeit win at 197 and junior Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) who grabbed a narrow 2-1 decision at heavyweight in his first action of the season.
Up next, the Mariners will compete at the Long Island Open this Sunday, Dec. 17, hosted by Nassau Community College in nearby Garden City, N.Y. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
