ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (Feb. 25, 2017) – Three members of the USMMA wrestling team have punched their ticket to the 2017 NCAA DIII National Championships with third place finishes at the East Regionals this weekend – sophomore Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) at 157, senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) at 184 and sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) at 285.

The Mariners finished seventh as a team with 61 points. Hosts Ferrum won the region with 135.5 points.

Beshada, who came into the weekend unranked at 157, battled through a bracket that featured seven ranked wrestlers. In the consolation semifinals, he defeated the bracket's #2 seed and the eighth-seeded wrestler nationally, Thomas Poklikuha from Stevens, via a 9-6 decision. In the third place match, Beshada triumphed over Centenary's Alec Donovan, the #3 seed in the bracket and 11th-ranked nationally, by a 14-5 Major Decision.

Rooney was the top seed in the 184-pound bracket, but suffered a tough loss in the semifinals to a returning All-American from 2016, Doug Hamann from TCNJ. He rebounded with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket to place third, including the final victory, a 3-1 decision over Ferrum's Adam Bresson.

Like Beshada, Raigoza defeated two nationally-ranked wrestlers in his weight class to finish in third place. In the quarterfinals of the main bracket, he defeated the #2 seed and 17th-ranked nationally Matan Peleg of Ursinus via a 3-2 decision. In the semifinals, he lost in the second tiebreaking preiod to the #8 wrestler in the country, Paul Triandafilou of Gettysburg. Raigoza responded by winning his final two matches in the wrestlebacks to finish third, including the final 6-1 decision over the #4 seed and 15th-ranked nationally Tate Dulany of Ferrum.

Sophomore Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) came in fourth place at 197 after wrestling to a 3-2 record and will serve as the first alternate for nationals.

The 2017 Division III Wrestling National Championships will be held March 10-11 at the La Crosse Center in La Cross, Wis. This is the ninth straight season that the Mariners have sent wrestlers on to that national event. More information will be available on www.USMMASports.com as the event draws nearer.
