KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy rallied back from a 25-0 deficit against the #6/7 team in the country, Centennial Conference foe Stevens, but fell just short of the Ducks, 25-24, at home on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 5-9 overall (3-4 Centennial), while Stevens remains undefeated at 20-0 (5-0 Centennial).
Prior to the first bout, the USMMA wrestling program paid tribute to its two graduating seniors of the Class of 2017, Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) and Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.), with a special Senior Night ceremony.
On the mat, after a forfeit at 125, two straight pins, a decision and a major decision gave the visitors a 25-0 lead through the 157 weight class, freshman Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) earned USMMA's first win of the night with a 9-3 decision at 165.
That was followed by another decision at 174 by classmate Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio), 13-11. The bout at 174 was such a back-and-forth affair and a last-second reversal by Stevens' junior Josh Smith forced sudden victory. Keil wasted little time in the first SV period, as he took down Smith for the win to make the match score 25-6 in favor of the Ducks.
Rooney claimed a forfeit victory at 184 to bring the score to 25-12 and that was followed by two straight pins by the Mariners by sophomore Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) at 197 in 3:30 and classmate Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) in 59 seconds at 285.
The Mariners are back at it next Wednesday, Feb. 8, for their Superintendents' Trophy matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard. Opening bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bears' Roland Hall.
