New London, CT - The USMMA werstling team finished sixth of eight teams at the 2014 All-Academy Championships, hosted at the United States Coast Guard Academy. Mike Mui (Hingham, MA) and Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY) both finished fourth in their respective weight class. The Mariners also posted a 3-0 record in bouts against the arch rival Coast Guard Bears.
Mui notched a pair of first period pins in the tournament, including putting the shoulders of USCGA's Earl Roberts to the mat in 2:07. Nathan Twito (Ames, IA) also earned a win against a Coast Guard opponent, defeating Michael Giorgio, 6-3. Freshman Jack Walsh (Glen Allen, VA) tallied a 16-0 tech. fall victory versus VMI's Joe Jarrells. Ben Stallings (Fairfax, VA) picked up a second period pinfall triumph versus Evan Poole of Norwich.
Miller's road to the consolation finals included a 9-2 decision over William Burns in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation final he dropped a tight 4-1 verdict to Division I opponent Konner Witt of Air Force. Sam Fry (Sturgis, MI) knocked off Hardy Hendren of VMI, 8-3 while Ricky Fisher (Nashville, TN) dispatched Jacob Tose of Norwich, 7-3. Brian Walker (Huntsville, AL) rounded out the Mariners perfect record over USCGA opponents with a 4-1 decision at heavyweight over Joel Yman.
Merchant Marine returns to the mat for a dual meet against Coast Guard Thursday night at 7:00 PM inside O'Hara Hall.
