York, PA – The USMMA wrestling team was led by Sam Fry (Sturgis, MI), who took third-place at 184 pounds, en route to an eighth place finish at the New Standard Corp. Invitational, hosted by York. Mike Mui (Hingham, MA), Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY), and Brian Walker (Huntsville, AL) all took fourth-place in their respective weight class. USMMA finished the tournament ahead of #12 Elizabethtown, Coast Guard, and Division I UMBC.
Fry took third-place after dropping his first match of the tournament. The senior would run the table in the consolation bracket with four straight wins, including a 5-3 verdict over Liam Korbul of Ithaca in the final bout. Mui went 4-2 to earn fourth at 125 pounds as the sophomore recorded three pins during the tournament.
Miller got off to a sizzling start at 174 pounds, pinning his opponent in each of his first two contests, including an 18 second pin in his second outing. He blanked Peter Kinsela of TCNJ, 10-0, to earn his way into the third-place bout. Walker continued his strong season at heavyweight as the rookie picked up three wins on the day and pinned Mike Spencer of York in 2:11 to reach the third-place bout. In that match, he dropped a hotly contested 7-5 decision to Shane Bartrum of Ithaca.
The USMMA wrestling team returns to action on Saturday, December 14 for a home tri-meet against NYU and Roger Williams.
