Merchant Marine Sinks Coast Guard, 26-15
New London, CT – The USMMA wrestling team knocked off rival Coast Guard Wednesday night, 26-15. Branden Yeik (Bremerton, WA) secured the largest margin of victory, posting a 25-7 technical fall at 157 pounds. The win also moves the Merchant Marine Academy to within one contest of the Coast Guard Academy in the competition for the Superintendent's Trophy. Merchant Marine (5-7) took an early 6-0 lead in the dual meet as the Bears forfeited at 125 pounds. However, the home side tallied back-to-back major decisions to gain a slim 10-8 advantage. Bernard Watson (Fort Morgan, CO) turned the tide for the Mariners with a convincing 12-1 major decision over Fred Green at 149 pouinds.
Yeik's technical fall triumph made it 15-8 and Nic Watson (Cocoa Beach, FL) added a 3-1 decision at 165 pounds to push the advantage to 18-8. Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY) made it four straight USMMA victories with a 10-2 rout of Dean Gilbert at 174 pounds. Tyler Russell (Georgetown, ME) recorded the final Mariner win of the meet in the 197 pound bout with a 10-2 major decision over Jack Balchikonis.
The USMMA wrestling team returns to the mat this weekend for a Centennial Conference Tri-meet against Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg.
