USMMA Comeback Falls Just Short in 21-19 Loss at #25 NYU
New York, NY – The USMMA wrestling team rallied from a 15-0 deficit, winning five of the last six bouts in a dual meet against NYU on Wednesday night, but came up two points short in a 21-19 setback. Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY) brought the Mariners to within two at 15-13 with a pin fall victory in 1:10 at 174 pounds. Miller's victory was especially impressive as he put the shoulders of #11 David Rice to the mat.
Branden Yeik (Bremerton, WA) started the Merchant Marine surge with a 7-5 decision over Gabe Gleason at 157 pounds. Jake Walker (Kansas City, MO) made it back-to-back wins for USMMA with a major decision against John Fitzsimmons. However, after Miller's bout the Violets would rebound with a pin fall victory of their own in the 184 pound match.
Tyler Russell (Georgetown, ME) kept the Mariner hopes alive with a narrow 5-4 decision against Sam Galassi. USMMA earned three more points with a triumph at 285 pounds but it was not enough to overtake NYU on the scoreboard.
The Merchant Marine wrestling teams returns to action this Saturday for a Centennial Conference tri-meet against McDaniel and Washington & Lee.
