Before USMMA: Potemken transfered from the New Mexico Military Institute after the 2011-12 academic year.  He competed in football and wrestling while at Thomas S. Wootton High School.  Potemken was a scholar-athlete that also was captain of the wrestling team and was named to the All-Gazette First-Team as a senior.
