LaCROSSE, Wis. – This week, has posted NCAA Division III Wresting Championship previews broken down by weight classes. By clicking on the link, the seedings and weight class predictions for all ten weight divisions can be viewed. This year, the United States Merchant Marine Academy is sending an impressive six wrestlers to the national tournament, including senior Vincent Renaut (Plymouth, Mass.) the defending 165-pound national champion.
Three of the six Kings Point wrestlers received Top-8 seedings. In the 157-pound class, senior Dan Twito (Cedar Falls, Iowa) is the eighth-seed, while Renaut is the 4-seed in the 165-division. Senior Judd Connell (Hastings, Minn.) received the highest seeding as he is the third-seed in the heavyweight division.
Senior Jordan Alfaro (Fayatteville, N.C.) finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 23-9 record in the 125-pound division. Moreover, Alfaro is a returning All-American. The Fayetteville native received a first-round bye and will wrestle Luther College's Daniel Mendoza, who is the 7-seed, in the second round.
Junior Martin Bell (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) closed out this season with a 19-11 overall record in the 149-pound weight class. Bell also received a first-round bye and will square off in the second round against the top-seeded Isaac Dukes from Case Western Reserve University.
Twito and Renaut finished with records of 17-5 and 11-5, respectively. Last year, Renaut became the first-ever Kings Point national wrestling champion. After a first-round bye, the 8-seed Twito will wrestle Troy Sterling of SUNY Cortland in the second round. The fourth-seeded Renaut will battle Josef Waples of St. Olaf College in second round action after a first-round bye.
In the 184-pound division, senior Scott Lowe (Euclid, Ohio) ended the 2010-11 season with a stellar 22-6 ledger and earned a first-round bye. In the second round, Lowe will square off against the top-seeded Phil Moenkedick of Concordia College (Moorhead, Minn.).
Connell, who was named the Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year, closed out his best season ever as a senior – with a 30-2 record. In opening round action, the third-seeded Connell will wrestle Ron Fusco of Springfield College.
