Women’s Lax Powers Past Otterbein, 19-2, In Season-Opener Down In Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 4, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team began the 2019 season off with a big 19-2 win over Otterbein University on Monday morning on the first day of the Spring Break trip down in Florida. The Mariners start the year 1-0, while the Cardinals fall to 0-4.

Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all players on the day with seven points on four goals and three assists, while three other Mariners also picked up hat tricks with three goals apiece – junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) and freshmen Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) and Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.), who both also dished out an assist each. Senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) added two goals and two helpers, while also scooping up a game-high eight groundballs. 

Sophomore Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) found the back of the net twice, and seniors Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both had one goal each. 

In goal, senior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) earned the victory after making four saves in the game.

Up next, the Mariners will take on King's College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at the Countryside Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
