Mariners Close Out Regular Season With 15-4 Home Win Over Purchase On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 28, 2018) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team concluded the regular season with a 15-4 home win over Purchase on Saturday. With the victory, the Mariners' record moves to 12-2 (7-0 Skyline), as they ran the table in conference play, while the Panthers end the year 7-6 (2-5 Skyline). 

Prior to the game, the Mariners paid tribute to their three graduating seniors of the Class of 2018 – Michelle Perri (Miami, Fla.), Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) and Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.). To view a photo gallery of the Senior Day ceremony, click here

On the field, Merchant Marine was led by junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine), who scored five goals, while classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) added four tallies and freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) also contributed a hat-trick, finding the back of the net three times. 

Freshman Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) and junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both had two points, with Neary scoring twice and Malone adding one goal and dishing out one assist. 

Reilly led all players with nine groundballs, six caused turnovers and six draw controls. Junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) added six GBs and three CTs, and earned the victory in net for the Mariners. Freshman Caitlin Erbacher (Fairborn, Ohio) finished the final 1:54 in the cage for USMMA. 

The Mariners quickly scored the first three goals of the game in the opening five-plus minutes before the Panthers got on the board with their first tally of the day at 23:15. Merchant Marine blew the game open with the next seven goals to take a 10-1 lead at 10:30 of the first half. Purchase scored once more in the first and the Mariners led 10-2 at halftime. USMMA scored five of the seven goals in the second half to cruise to the victory. 

Three Panther players recorded a team-high two points each – seniors Zoe Hines and Kelly Turtell and freshman Gabriella Castles. Castles scored twice, while Hines and Turtell both had a goal and an assist each. Freshman Maddy Mecca added an assist. In goal, senior Allyson Wong made 11 saves in the losing effort. 

Up next, the #1 seed Mariners will host the Skyline Semifinals on Wednesday night, May 2, at Brooks Stadium against #4 seed Mount St. Mary.
