Mariners Break Program Record With Ninth Win Of The Season In 17-3 Sound Shootout Victory Over SUNY Maritime

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team cruised to a 17-3 victory over rival SUNY Maritime Wednesday evening at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners improved to 9-2 (4-0 Skyline) after their sixth-straight victory, while the Privateers dropped to 3-8 (1-5 Skyline). The nine wins is a new program record, besting the mark of eight set by the Mariners back in 2016.

Junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all scorers in the game with six points on five goals and one assist.

Eight different Mariners found the back of the cage on the night. Willard and classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) both netted five-goals apiece. Reilly won a team-best seven draw controls and had four caused turnovers while gobbling up three groundballs.

Junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) put up three points with two goals and an assist, while also winning three draw controls and causing three turnovers in the contest. Juniors Catherine and Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) had a goal apiece, while freshmen Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) and Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) and senior Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.) scored as well.

The Mariner defense forced 11 SUNY Maritime turnovers for the game. Junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made four saves and led the team with five groundballs.

USMMA scored the first eight goals of the game and led 9-2 at halftime. The second half was more of the same, as the Mariners tallied the first four goals and eight of the nine in total to claim the 17-3 victory.

For the Privateers, junior Krista Deleva led the way with two goals and senior Catherine Pfundstein won a game-high six draw controls and scored once. Sophomore goalie Esmeralda Hernandez stopped 15 Mariner shots.

Merchant Marine will play next this Saturday, April 21, at home against St. Joseph's-Long Island in a key, late-season Skyline Conference battle. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video stream of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page
