Mariners Set Program Record For Goals In A Game And Largest Margin Of Victory In Home-Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 15, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Centenary, 24-1, on Wednesday evening at Brooks Stadium in the Mariners' 2018 home-opener. In victory, USMMA improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Cyclones fall to 0-3. 

The 24 goals were the most ever scored by Merchant Marine in the program's six-year history. The previous mark was 21 goals in the 2017 home-opener over Johnson St. back on March 12, 2017. This was also the largest margin of victory for the Mariners.

Sophomore Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) led all players in the game with eight points on four goals and four assists. Junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) found the back of the net six times and also recorded a game-high six draw controls. Three other Mariners had three-point efforts – junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) with three goals, classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) with two tallies and one helper and freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) with a goal and two assist. Midas also scooped up a game-high five groundballs to go along with five draw controls. 

Four Mariners tallied two points each, as senior Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.), sophomore Elena Chamberland (Lakeland, Fla.) and freshman Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) all scored twice and junior Lexi Ibach (Reading, Pa.) dished out two assists. Junior twin sisters Elizabeth and Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) both found the back of the net once and freshman Shannon Fahsbender (Byram, N.J.) had one assist to round out the Mariner scorers on the night. 

In goal, junior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) earned the win and made one save in one half of action. In the second half, freshman Caitlin Erbacher (Fairborn, Ohio) had one stop. 

For the Cyclones, junior Kristin Karszen scored the squad's lone goal late in the second half and also led the team with four draw controls to go along with two groundballs. Junior goalie Renee Hack made an impressive 21 saves on the night. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Albany, N.Y., this Saturday, March 17, to take on former Skyline Conference opponent Sage (0-1). Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Albany College of Pharmacy Athletic Complex. Live stats for the contest will be available at this link
