Towson, MD - Emily Finnin (Littleton, CO) and Grace Mariani (Amherst, NY) scored for the Mariners as Goucher defeated the USMMA women's lacrosse team, 17-2, Saturday afternoon. Rita Meissner, Megan Meluskey, and Hannah Mae Brown all registered a game high three goals for the Gophers. USMMA was outshot 30-5 on the day while Kelly Allison (Palos Verdes, CA) made eight saves in goal for the Mariners.
Goucher (7-5, 2-0 Landmark) scored the first nine goals of the game in the first half to build an early cushion. Mariani netted the final goal of the half, an unassisted marker, as USMMA trailed 9-1 at halftime.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1-5, 0-3 Landmark) would be unable to keep stop the Gophers momentum as the home team scored eight unanswered goals to start the second period. Finnin deposited a free position shot into the cage with 1:24 remaining in the game for her fifth goal of the year.
Mariani led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers on defense while Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) secured a game high eight draw controls for the Mariners. USMMA committed 23 turnovers compared to only four for 14 for the Gophers while the Mariners were also 4-of-13 on clear attempts.
The USMMA women's lacrosse team will take the field again Tuesday night for a home game at Brooks Stadium against Old Westbury.
