USMMA Comeback Falls Short in 9-8 Loss to Purchase State
Kings Point, NY – Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) scored her fourth goal with 39 seconds remaining to cut the USMMA deficit to 9-8 but Purchase State would hold on late for the victory. Shannen Dunn (Bourne, MA) got off one last shot, with 12 seconds left, for the Mariners to try and force overtime but it hit the side of the net. Rachel Smith (Broomfield, CO) made 10 saves in net for the home team.
Merchant Marine (1-2) took a 5-3 lead in the first half with a goal from A Jordan Pappas (Howell, NJ). Emilly Finnin (Littleton, CO) had a strong day for the Mariners with six draw controls and five ground balls. Grace Mariani (Amherst, NY) also posted a solid outing on defense with four caused turnovers, three ground balls, and one goal.
Purchase State (2-0) scored twice at the end of the first half to level the tilt at 5-5 heading to halftime. The visitors built a 9-6 advantage with 7:25 to play thanks to a Samantha Rich goal. Rich finished the night with four goals and one assist for the Panthers.
Finnin netted her second goal of the night with 2:05 before Winfree brought UMSMA to within one. Finnin would secure the ensuing draw but Dunn's shot just missed sending the two teams to overtime. Jess Lindsay made six saves between the pipes to secure the 9-8 win for Purchase State.
The USMMA women's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday at Drew in the Mariners Landmark Conference opener.
