Kings Point, NY - The USMMA women's lacrosse team held its first lead in program history as Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) tallied the opening goal in the Mariners clash with Old Westbury Tuesday afternoon. However, the Panthers would go on to defeat the Mariners by a final score of 18-7 on the strength of four goals from Anna Noens. Winfree, Kristen Bell (New City, NY), and Caitlin McCabe (Edgewood, NM) all registered two goals for USMMA.
Old Westbury (1-5), also a first-year program, earned its first victory in program history as seven different players found the back of the net. The Panthers won the turnover battle, 24-13, and also scooped up 26 ground balls to only ten for the Mariners.
Merchant Marine (0-5) rallied from an early 6-1 deficit with back-to-back goals from McCabe that came within 21 seconds of each other midway through the first period. USMMA responded to each of Old Westbury's next two markers with a strike from Bell as her final marker made it 8-5 at the 4:49 mark. However, the Panthers eventually took a 10-5 cushion into halftime.
The Mariners scored to open the second half as Jessica willey (Warner Robins, GA) slammed home an unassisted goal. Bell racked up a game high 6 draw controls for Merchant Marine while goaltender Kelly Allison (Palos Verdes, CA) made 17 saves between the pipes. Old Westbury posted eight of the final nine goals of the day en route to the 18-7 decision.
The USMMA women's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday afternoon as they host St. Elizabeth at Brooks Stadium for a 1:00 pm contest.
