Hunter Named Skyline Rookie Of The Year, Lands On First Team With D’Arcy; Dempsey Selected As Coach Of The Year

Complete Release From The Skyline Conference

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2019) – The Skyline Conference announced the postseason honors and All-Skyline Teams for the 2018-19 women's basketball season on Monday and USMMA boasted two major award winners and two players to the all-conference team. Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) was chosen by the conference head coaches as the Rookie of the Year, while 11th-year head coach Matt Dempsey was selected as the Coach of the Year. In addition to the Rookie of the Year honors, Hunter also landed on the All-Skyline First Team along with junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.)

Hunter is the Skyline leader with 18 double-doubles on the season – a mark that, as of Feb. 21, ranked sixth among all DIII players. She also ranks third in the conference with a .518 shooting percentage and 12.3 rebounds per game, while her 17.1 points per game are good for fifth in the league. The plebe earned Skyline Rookie of the Week honors a conference-best six times throughout the year and garnered Skyline and Met. Basketball Writers Association DII/DIII Player of the Week and D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week honors during the first month of the season.

This is D'Arcy's second-straight season being selected to the First Team All-Skyline. This year, the Mariners' tri-captain has produced 14.4 points per game (good for 12th in the conference), 6.1 rebounds per game, a .375 shooting percentage (ranked eighth in the Skyline), 1.5 blocks per game (fourth in the league), a 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio (sixth in the conference) and 3.1 assists per game (ninth in the Skyline). D'Arcy is no stranger to postseason honors in her career – in addition to the First Team nod in 2017-18, she was also selected as the Skyline Rookie of the Year back in 2016-17.

Dempsey has led the Mariners to a program-best 22 wins this season. They began the year on an 11-game winning streak and finished the regular season with a 16-2 record in Skyline Conference contests, which was good for the #2 seed in the Skyline Tournament. Dempsey, along with long-time assistant Alexa Shields, guided Merchant Marine to its first-ever Skyline Championship and berth into the NCAA Tournament with an exciting 44-39 road victory at top-seed Mount St. Mary in the title game this past Saturday.
