KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2019) – For the sixth time this season, USMMA freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) was selected as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for women's basketball, the league announced on Monday. The recognition comes after her performances in the Mariners' two road Skyline games last week – a win at Old Westbury on Thursday and a narrow loss at Mount St. Mary on Saturday.
Hunter led the Mariners with 16.0 points per game and was second on the team with 9.5 rebounds per game over the two contests. The rookie drained 10 points with six boards on Thursday and then finished the week with a game-high 22 points and a team-best 13 rebounds on Saturday for her 17th double-double of the year.

Hunter continues to rank high among the national leaders, as her 17 double-doubles are eighth in the country, her 12.3 rebounds per game rank 15th, as does her 5.0 offensive boards per game. Additionally, her 282 total rebounds are good for 25th in the nation.
Two other Mariners have cracked the top-40 among all DIII women's basketball players – junior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) ranks 36th with 2.22 blocked shots per game and 40th with 51 total blocks, while classmate Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) is 40th in the country with 4.0 offensive boards per game.
As a team, the Mariners rank in the top-25 in the nation in 10 categories. They are listed below.
- Second in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 45.9 points per game
- Third in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 22.6-percent beyond the arc
- Fourth in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 30.3-perecnt shooting
- Fifth in two categories – blocked shots per game (6.5) and offensive rebounds per game (20.0)
- Sixth in three categories – fewest total fouls (276), personal fouls per game (12.0) and rebounds per game (49.26)
- And eighth in two categories – total blocked shots (149) and rebound margin (+12.5)

This Thursday, Feb. 21, the Mariners will host the Skyline Tournament semifinals against the winner of the #6 Farmingdale State-#3 Old Westbury first-round game which is slated for tonight at Old Westbury. Tipoff of the semifinals on Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
