NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 4, 2019) – The USMMA women's basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching loss to arch-rival Coast Guard on a buzzer-beater, 58-56, on Monday night at the Bears' Roland Hall Gym. The defeat halted the Mariners' six-game winning streak, as they fall to 17-2 on the season, while Coast Guard improves to 6-15 on the year.
Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led the Mariners with a game-high 17 points and freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season.
The Mariners led 47-42 with 8:27 left before the Bears ran off seven-straight to take the lead 49-47 with 6:11 remaining. Later on, Merchant Marine led 54-53 before a three-pointer with 1:35 left gave Coast Guard a 56-54 lead. The Mariners pulled even on a put-back by Hunter with 14 seconds left.
A jump ball as time was expiring led to the Bears retaining possession with the clock reading 0.3 seconds, however after the referees convened, they added an additional 0.3 seconds, allowing for a quick catch and shoot. Coast Guard inbounded the ball with 0.6 seconds left and senior Micaela Martinelli found sophomore Annabella Farabaugh cutting down the lane, and Farabaugh laid it off the glass for the win.
The Bears raced out to a 22-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Mariners outscored Coast Guard 19-5 in the second, including the final 13 points of the half, to take a 32-27 lead at the break.
Merchant Marine led by as many as seven points in the third quarter, 34-27, before seven-straight by the Bears tied the game at 34-34 with 3:23 left in the third quarter. The Mariners led, 44-41, after three quarters.
Coast Guard shot 38.5-percent from the floor (25-for-65) in the win and connected on 6-of-21 from three-point range, while Merchant Marine was 18-of-56 (32.1-percent) from the field and hit 2-of-8 from behind the arc.
Farabaugh led the Bears with 15 points off the bench, while junior Zoe Riis-Fallica added 11 points and Martinelli scored 10 points, all coming in the fourth quarter. Martinelli also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go with five assists for the Bears.
Up next, the Mariners will travel up to the Bronx this Wednesday, Feb. 6, for a Skyline Conference contest at the College of Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Dolphins' Sharp Center. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
