FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2018) – The USMMA women's basketball team suffered a 65-49 road loss at Skyline opponent Farmingdale State on Saturday. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 16-8 (12-6 Skyline), while the Rams improve to 14-11 (13-5 Skyline).
Sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led Merchant Marine with 13 points to go along with nine rebounds, while classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) added 11 with eight boards. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) just missed out a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds and also tied for the game-best with five assists.
Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed six points apiece, with Salazar also bringing down seven rebounds and Vega grabbing four. Off the bench, freshman Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with four points.
Farmingdale raced out to a 10-0 lead in the opening four minutes and never looked back. The Rams' lead hit its highest of the day, 24 points, 36-12, at 3:50 of the second quarter, but the Mariners finished strong with an 8-2 run and trailed 38-20 at halftime.
Merchant Marine had a strong third quarter, but still trailed by 11 points, 46-35, when the buzzer sounded to end the frame. The Rams kept their advantage in double-figures throughout the fourth and cruised to the victory.
Junior Alexis Antonacci led all players in the game with 20 points, while senior Essence Casey added 16 to go along with five assists and five steals and classmate Liz Durchhalter drained 11 points. Fellow senior Kaelyn Ward had a team-high eight rebounds as well as contributing seven points towards the win.
The Mariners have clinched the #4 seed in the upcoming 2018 Skyline Championships. They will host #5 seed Mount St. Vincent (11-11, 9-9 Skyline) on Tuesday night, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
