Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team plays back-to-back road games Saturday and Monday against Susquehanna and New Rochelle, respectively. The Mariners enter the weekend on a three-game losing streak after dropping an 81-39 decision to Scranton on Wednesday night. Merchant Marine is currently 1-4 on the road this year, holding an 0-3 away record in conference games.
Series History... Susquehanna holds an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series against the Mariners. The Crusaders swept last year's two meetings, which were both decided by two possessions. USMMA is a perfect 7-0 versus New Rochelle in the 14-year history of the program. The Mariners claimed the 2013 meeting against the Blue Angels, 80-51, behind 18 points from Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL).
Wehlburg Stands Tall... Freshman Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) posted a career high four blocks against Scranton. She also recorded four points and six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Wehlburg now leads the Mariners with 1.1 blocks per game this season.
Rebounding Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in rebounding with 49.6 boards per game. The Mariners dominated the glass against Catholic and finished with a 57-35 edge. USMMA also ranks in the NCAA Division III top-15 with a margin of +11.2 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Moravian, Scranton, and Catholic all boast winning percentages over .750 this season and are perfect in league contests. Moravian is 13-2 on the year and received votes in the latest USA Today National Coaches' Poll while Scranton owns a league-best 10-game winning streak
Scouting the Crusaders... Mariah Monahan is Susquehanna's leading scorer with 12.2 points per game. Nikki Komara grabs 6.5 rebounds per game to pace the Crusaders. Susquehanna is shooting 32.8 percent from three-point range on the year but is just 2-4 at home in the 2013-14 campaign.
Scouting the Blue Angels... New Rochelle enters the weekend having lost five of its last six games. The Blue Angels have two players scoring over 20 points per game in Jasmine Brandon (22.6 ppg) and Jah-Leah Ellis (21.0 ppg).
