Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team closes out 2013 at home against Rutgers-Camden on Friday night. The Mariners ended a six game losing streak last time out with a 60-37 triumph over St. Joseph's (LI). The Scarlet Raptors will be playing their first game in 10 days and have lost their last three outings.
Series History... Merchant Marine trails the all-time series against Rutgers-Camden, 2-1. The Scarlet Raptors won last year's meeting, 69-54, despite a double-double off the bench from Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) with 11 points and 11 rebounds. USMMA only victory over Rutgers-Camden came in a 38-27 verdict during the 2010-11 season.
Double Down... Both Resor and Kristina Walz (Monona, IA) struck for a double-double against St. Joseph's (LI). Walz finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Resor posted 12 points and 12 rebounds. It was the second double-double of the season for both members of the front court.
Hofmann Heats Up... Freshman Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA) has had her first three double digit scoring games of her career in the Mariners last three contests. Last time out, the guard tied a career best with 14 points on 6-of-7 from the field. Hoffman secured 14 points against Moravian after shooting a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line and is now shooting 85 percent on the year at the charity stripe.
Rebounding Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in rebounding with 52.5 boards per game. The Mariners eclipsed the 60 rebound plateau for the third time in 2013-14 with 62 against the Golden Eagles. USMMA has outrebounded its opponent in 7-of-8 games and holds a margin of +16.8 on the year.
Limiting Fouls... The Mariners committed a season low eight personal fouls versus St. Joseph's (LI). USMMA was whistled for over 20 fouls in each of the first three games this season. However, since then Merchant Marine has not reached that mark and has been under 15 fouls three times.
