Mariners Sail by Medgar Evers 71-20

Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (9-12, 1-10) defeated the Cougars of Medgar Evers College (0-24, 0-14) by a 71-20 score Thursday night in Kings Point, NY.

USMMA was led by freshman guard Marlee Chovich (Oregon City, OR) who tallied career highs in points (16), rebounds (6), and three-pointers (4).

Merchant Marine also received solid scoring production from senior captain Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, NY) and sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) who notched 11 and 10 points respectively. 

Sophomore forward Sara Ellenberger (Phoenix, AZ) nabbed a game-high 11 boards while sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) fell just one shy of grabbing her ninth double-digit rebound game of the season. 

The Mariners scored the first 10 points of the game and 20 of the first 24 as Merchant Marine took a 29-9 lead into the break. 

In the first half, USMMA outscored the Cougars 10-0 on fast breaks and 14-4 on points in the paint.

Merchant Marine built on their lead in the second half as the game ended with nine different Mariners tallying points and 10 different Mariners grabbing rebounds. 

USMMA ended the contest on a 12-3 run, shooting 47.6% from the field and 41.7% from downtown on the game. 

The Mariners have now won two consecutive games as they return to Landmark Conference play against Juniata (16-6, 7-4) Saturday February 9, at 2:00 PM.  Prior to the contest, USMMA will be honoring their senior captains for their four years of service, dedication, and leadership to the academy and the women's basketball program.
