Kings Point, NY – Sophomore forward Rebecca Resor's (Bay St. Louis, MS) team-leading fourth double-double of the season wasn't enough as the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-9, 1-7) fell to the Rangers of Drew University (7-11, 3-4) by a score of 57-42 Saturday night in Kings Point, NY.
Resor was the only Mariner in double figures, netting 10 points and adding 13 rebounds. Junior forward Kristina Walz (Monona, IA) also had a solid night crashing the boards grabbing 11 off the glass.
Sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) contributed a pair of late three-pointers off the bench for six points, adding three blocks and two steals on the night.
The Rangers opened the game on a 6-0 run, forcing Head Coach Matt Dempsey to use an early timeout in an effort to halt Drew's momentum. It seemed to work as Merchant Marine responded with a 10-0 streak of their own, taking a four point lead on a jumper by senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA).
Keeping with the theme of early scoring runs, Drew replied by snagging 15 of the next 16 points to grab a 21-11 lead with 8:15 remaining in the half. This time, USMMA was unable to strike back as swiftly as they did earlier, and would head into the break looking to overcome a 31-23 deficit.
The Mariners started the second half with a three-pointer by freshman guard Marlee Chovich (Oregon City, OR) to cut the Ranger advantage to five. However, this would be the closest Merchant Marine would come to regaining the advantage as Drew spent the remainder of the game slowly building on their lead.
A Resor layup near the midway point of the second half would give Kings Point some life as the Ranger advantage was cut to 10, but Drew responded with a three-pointer and was able to ride their lead to victory.
The Mariners next matchup will be against #17 Catholic (17-1, 6-1) Saturday Jan. 26th in Kings Point, NY.
