Mariners End Two-Game Skid; Defeat York 53-34
Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-6) upended the Cardinals of York College (0-14) by a score of 53-34 Monday night in Kings Point, NY.
Merchant Marine was led in scoring by senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA), who racked up 19 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and five assists.
In the winning effort, senior captain Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, NY) notched her team-high 10th double-figure scoring game of the season with 12 points, and sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) nabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Merchant Marine raced out to a quick start, opening an 8-0 lead in the first 4:34 of the contest on a fast-break layup by Kaileh. Although the Cardinals would cut the Mariner advantage to one on a three-pointer by freshman forward Nia Rene (Brooklyn, NY), Kings Point would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
A Marlee Chovich (Lake Oswego, OR) jumper at the 4:15 mark of the first half would extend the Merchant Marine lead to 22-15 and the Mariners would end up taking a 22-18 advantage into the break.
The Mariners controlled the second half; nearly doubling York's scoring output (31-16). A pair of free throws by Josephs near the mid-way point of the half put Kings Point up by double digits, and two more free throws by junior forward Alexandra Winfree (Milstone, NJ) would give Merchant Marine a 22 point advantage; their largest of the contest.
Merchant Marine outscored York in points in the paint (22-4), points off turnovers (17-10), second chance points (10-5), and fast break scoring (12-2).
The Cardinals were led by freshman guard Angelika Ruggiano (Queens, NY) who tallied 10 points, and senior guard Ishonda McFarland (Bronx, NY) and junior center Danielle Dunn (Queens, NY) who grabbed 11 rebounds apiece.
Merchant Marine will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they host Moravian College (14-1, 5-0) at 7:00 PM in Kings Point.
