Game Notes - PDF

Setting the Scene...
The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-4) will take on the Warriors of Vaughn College (0-5) Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.  The Mariners have lost their last three contests, all on the road, while Vaughn is still searching for their first victory of the season.

Series History...
USMMA is 1-0 all-time against the Warriors.  Their only other meeting took place last season in Kings Point; a game which the Mariners won 81-10.

Back on Track... Sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal, who was a standout last season leading the Mariners in scoring as a freshman, had her first double-figure game of the year last Sunday against Scranton.  Coming off the bench, she played 27 minutes, scored a team-high 15 points, and hit 3-6 from three point range and 6-8 from the foul line.  VanDerWal followed up that performance with 14 points, including going 4-8 from three-point range against Division-I Army, setting an academy record for single-game scoring against a D-I opponent.  She became one of only four female Mariners in academy history to reach double-figures against Army.

Sharing the Rock... Senior captains Tamara Kaileh and Roshenda Josephs are leading USMMA in scoring, averaging double-figures with 12.4 and 10.6 points per game respectively.  However, the next three top scorers, junior forward Kristina Walz, sophomore forward Rebecca Resor, and VanDerWal all have exactly 58 points on the season, averaging 7.3 points per game apiece.

Geographically Diverse...
USMMA sports an 11 player roster with each member hailing from a different state.  This makes USMMA the only team in NCAA Division-III basketball without having players from duplicate home states.  States Represented: (AZ, CO, CT, IA, IL, MS, NJ, NY, OR, PA, VA)

Steer thee Well, Kings Point!... The Mariners return home after playing four straight games on the road.  USMMA is 3-1 at Kings Point and both Josephs and Resor have set season-high marks in points, assists, field goals, free throws, steals, and blocks while playing on their home floor.

Chasing 300...
Head Coach Matt Dempsey enters the game two wins away from the 300 plateau in his NCAA head coaching career.  Since 1986, he's recorded 38 wins as the head women's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, 216 wins as the as the head men's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, and 44 wins as the head women's basketball coach at the Merchant Marine Academy; compiling a career record of 298-254.
