Scranton, PA -- The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-3, 1-2) were defeated by the Royals of Scranton University (7-2, 2-0) Sunday afternoon by a score of 81 - 59 in Scranton, PA.
The opening minutes were tightly contested, with each team trading buckets. Royals' sophomore forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, VA) opened the scoring with a layup at the 19:13 mark and Mariners' sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) quickly responded a minute later with a jump shot.
Junior Guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, NJ) came back with a layup for Scranton, but once again Merchant Marine countered with a jumper from senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA) knotting the game at four.
The Mariners would take their first lead of the contest (9-7) on a three pointer by sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) with 13:28 remaining in the half, but Sweeney came right back with a three pointer of her own to regain the advantage for the Royals.
A pair of free throws from senior captain Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, NY) gave the Mariners their largest advantage of the game (19-16), but from that point it was all Royals as Scranton would go on a 23-9 run; closing out the half with a 39-28 lead.
The Royals would pull away from the start of the second, scoring 18 of the first 20 points in the opening 7:08 of the half.
The Mariners hung tough, but couldn't get back in the contest, eventually falling 81 - 59.
Three Mariners scored double figures with VanDerWal, Kaileh, and Josephs scoring 15, 13, and 11 respectively. Sophomore forward Sara Ellenberger (Phoenix, AZ) led USMMA in rebounding with seven boards.
Kings Point returns to action this Thursday when they head to West Point to face off against Division-I service academy Army. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM.
