Setting the Scene... Coming off of a win over Goucher College in their Landmark Conference opener, the Mariners will try to build on their momentum against the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden. Merchant Marine looks to start the year 4-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season, which was the last time they qualified for postseason play.
Series History... USMMA is 1-1 all-time against Rutgers-Camden. Their only two meetings have come in each of the past two seasons; both at Kings Point. The Mariners won a low scoring 38-27 contest in 2010-11 and the Scarlet Raptors were victorious by a score of 69-62 a year ago.
Scouting the Scarlet Raptors.. Rutgers-Camden comes into this game with a 2-2 overall record and a 1-2 record in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Senior forward Brittany Turner (Belleville, NJ) has been a standout thus far for the Scarlet Raptors. Throughout four games, she is averaging 20 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting .433 from the field, .333 from three point range, and .606 from the charity strike.
A-"Shendi"-ng the Leaderboards.. Senior captain Shendi Josephs (Culpeper, VA) currently leads the Mariners in scoring with 13.3 pointsper game, and in steals with 12 total. Her five steals against Goucher moved her into third place on USMMA's all-time career steals list with 161. Her two blocks against Purchase College gave her sole possesion of 10th place on the all-time career blocks list with 27. She is three away from moving into second place on the steals list, and five away from taking ninth on the blocks list.
Breaking Down the "Walz"... Despite not actually recording a double-double this season, Kristina Walz (Monona, IA) is averaging a double-double with 11.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game. She is currently ranked fourth in the Landmark Conference in rebounds per game and fourth in shooting percentage, averaging .500 from the field.
