USMMA Begins 2012-13 Campaign Tomorrow Against Berkeley

Setting the Scene... Merchant Marine women's basketball opens the 2012-13 season Saturday November 17th at O'Hara Hall against the Knights of Berkeley College.  It will mark the first USMMA Network Broadcast featuring live streaming of both audio and video.  Play-by-Play commentary will be done by Jacob Wilkins who has previously worked with MSG Varsity and Sirius XM Radio.

Series History... USMMA is 1-1 all-time against Berkeley, meeting in each of the previous two seasons.  In 2010-11 the Mariners defeated the Knights 71-47 and last year Merchant Marine was up-ended by Berkeley 49-44; both games were played in Kings Point, NY.

A-"Shend"-ing  the leaderboards... Senior guard Shendy Josephs ended the 2011-12 campaign with the fourth highest single-season steal total in academy history (75).  She currently ranks fifth in career  steals (149), eighth in career assists (134), and is tied for tenth in career blocks (25). 

Mariners Picked Fifth in Preseason Polls... Landmark Conference coaches picked Merchant Marine to finish fifth for the upcoming 2012-13 season after placed sixth a year ago with an overall record of 10-15 and a conference record of 4-10.  2007-08 marks the only time Merchant Marine has advanced to the Landmark Conference playoffs; finishing fourth and losing to Scranton in the first round.  

Familiar Faces... USMMA returns nine players from last season, having only graduated one senior.

Up Next... The Mariners open the season on a four game home stand before heading on the road for four straight.  Their next matchup will come after a ten day break when they tip off against Purchase College Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 PM.  USMMA is 3-1 all-time against Purchase.
