The United States Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team (9-14, 4-9) fell to Moravian College (15-9, 8-5) Saturday afternoon at Liebertz gym in Kings Point, N.Y. The Mariners were unable to generate enough offense to keep pace with the Greyhounds, as they were bested by a score of 77-56.
The Mariners were led in points by junior forward Emily Meehan who scored 10. Junior guard Roshenda Josephs had another busy night adding six boards, five points, and four assists, and freshman guard Demi Van Der Wal came just short of recording a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Greyhounds lived up to their name outscoring the Mariners 21-0 on fast breaks. They were led by senior forward Alexandra Blair and junior guard Amanda Kreuder who netted 11 and 10 points respectively. Blair also snagged 11 boards to earn a double-double.
Moravian opened up a 42-25 lead at halftime and never looked back. The Mariners fought hard in the second half to close the gap to 10 on an Emily Meehan jumper with 11:09 remaining, but Moravian quickly turned the tide scoring the next 14 points, ending the Mariner's chance at a comeback.
USMMA has two games remaining on their schedule; a non-conference matchup against rival U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Monday February 13th at home and a final Landmark Conference game at Drew University on Saturday February 18th.
