The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team (9-12, 4-7 Landmark) defeated the College of New Rochelle (6-14, 1-3 Hudson Valley) Monday night by a score of 81-33. Five Mariners reached double figures including two double-doubles as Kings Point notched a solid non-conference road victory.
The Mariners had the game in hand early jumping out to a quick lead and opening up an 18 point advantage at the half. Kings Point continued to extend the lead ultimately winning by 48; their second greatest margin of victory this season.
Sophomore forwards Kristina Walz and Alexandra Winfree (pictured right) both recorded double-doubles with Walz leading the team grabbing 14 rebounds and scoring 15 points. Winfree scored 13 and nabbed 10 boards. Freshman guard Demi Van Der Wal bagged the highest scoring total with 18. Also contributing double figures were senior captain Alicen Heinrich and junior guard Roshenda Josephs netting 14 and 13 respectively.
With the win, the Mariners improve to 9-12 overall. They prepare for a crucial weekend home series against Landmark Conference opponents Scranton and Moravian in an attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.
