The U.S Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team fell to first place Juniata College Saturday afternoon by a final score of 57-41 at Liebertz gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y.
The Eagles of Juniata College came into the game winners of 10 in a row seated atop the Landmark Conference standings. Despite falling behind 12-4 in the early stages of the first half, the Mariners were able to keep the game close by clogging the paint, forcing the Eagles into taking low percentage jumpers from the perimeter. Freshman guard Demi Van Der Wal scored four of her team high 15 points in the final minutes of the first half knotting the game at 24 going into halftime.
The Mariner's grabbed an early lead in the second half by means of a Van Der Wal layup with 18:21 left to play. However it would be the last lead the Mariners would have as the Eagles made the necessary halftime adjustments to open up an 11 point lead over the next 10 minutes of game time.
Mariner's junior guard Tamara Kaileh contributed eight points off the bench, freshmen forward Rebecca Resor grabbed a game high 11 rebounds, and junior Guard Roshenda Josephs added to her steal total with a game high of four.
The Eagles were led in scoring by junior forward Alyssia Gordon who had 15. Sophomore forward Kate McDonald nabbed a team high 10 rebounds and was in the faces of USMMA's scorers for much of the night with a game high five blocks.
The loss drops the Mariners to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in Landmark Conference play. They will have the next week off as they face off in back to back road matchups next weekend against Goucher College on Friday February 3rd, and Catholic University of America on Saturday February 4th.
