Matt Dempsey Selected for Green Mountain College Athletic Hall of Fame

POULTNEY, Vt. – United States Merchant Marine Academy Head Women’s Basketball Coach Matt Dempsey has been elected to Green Mountain College’s Athletic Hall of Fame after his stellar 13-year coaching career guiding the Eagles.

At Green Mountain, Dempsey led the Eagles to five Mayflower Conference Championships and to a 216-157 overall record during his tenure as Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Green Mountain advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times under Dempsey’s tutelage – the only national tournament appearances GMC’s men’s basketball team has in school history. Dempsey earned five conference Coach of the Year honors and was selected as the 1994 NAIA District V Coach of the Year.

Dempsey remains to this day the winningest coach in the program’s history.

In addition, Dempsey was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Green Mountain from 1986-1989 and also served as the Head Softball Coach from 1990-2001.

Dempsey is also a member of the Castleton State College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1997 after having a successful career as a student-athlete on the men’s basketball team in the early 1980s.

The induction ceremony will be June 4, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. on the Green Mountain College campus in Poultney, Vermont.
