Women’s Basketball Wins Big Versus New Rochelle, 74-29

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Tuesday evening, all but one player on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball squad scored as the Mariners cruised past the College of New Rochelle, 74-29 at the Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y. on "Think Pink" night. With the win in this penultimate game of the season, USMMA improved to 7-17 on the year. Following the loss, the Blue Angels dropped to 2-16 overall.

The Mariners scored 10 unanswered points to open the game, and by the 10-minute mark had posted a 21-4 lead. Kings Point took advantage of the high number of turnovers CNR had and recorded a high-water mark of 27 points in the first half. USMMA went into halftime ahead 37-17.

New Rochelle continued the same trend in the second half, committing too many turnovers (38 total in the game), while Kings Point made the visitors pay for them. USMMA sophomore guard Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, Va.) stole the ball away a stellar six times, while senior forward Janay Weathers (Fredericksburg, Va.) had four steals.

Merchant Marine ended the game on their highest note of the night – a 45-point differential (74-29 triumph).

For the Mariners, sophomore guard Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored a game-high 14 points, while Josephs and senior guard Rebecca Grimes (Fairfax, Va.) had 10 each. With those 10 points, Grimes took sole possession of third place on the all-time women's basketball scoring list at the Academy. The Fairfax native now has 1,018 career points.

For the Blue Angels, rookie guard Holly Cammorota (Bronx, N.Y.) scored nine points, while sophomore guard Elizabeth Johnston (Plano, Texas) netted eight.

Head Coach Matt Dempsey and the Mariners close out their 2010-11 season when they host Landmark Conference-opponent Drew University on Saturday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, USMMA's four seniors – Rebecca Grimes, Janay Weathers, Nicole Barriga and Meghan Dillard – will be honored for the contributions they have made to the program over the past four years. A video webcast will have all the action at www.usmmasports.com.
