TOWSON, Md. – On Friday evening, the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball squad dropped a Landmark Conference match-up against Goucher College, 56-44 at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center in Towson, Md. With the win, the Gophers improved to 3-18 overall and 3-9 in league play. Following the loss, the Mariners fell to 6-16 on the year and 0-12 in conference action.
With 8:44 remaining in the opening half, Goucher had notched a 24-8 lead. Over the final seven minutes of the period, Kings Point spun off a 12-6 run to trim the Gophers' edge to 30-20 as the intermission arrived.
USMMA senior forward Janay Weathers (Fredericksburg, Va.) drove in a lay-up with 16:26 left in the second half to cut the Mariners' deficit to the lowest it would be for the rest of the game (35-28). Unfortunately, the Gophers reeled off 10 straight points and the Mariners could not recover.
The final point of the contest came from Kings Point freshman guard Katie Franchois (Perkasie, Pa.), who hit a free throw with four seconds left to change the score to 56-44 in favor of the hosts.
For the Mariners, senior guard Rebecca Grimes (Fairfax, Va.) led the team with 14 points, which included a pair of three-balls. With those 14 points, Grimes now needs just two more to hit 1,000 for her Kings Point career. Weathers recorded a meaty double-double as she scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds.
Head Coach Matt Dempsey and the Mariners continue conference play tomorrow when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic University. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. If you can't make it to the game, the Cardinals will have LiveStats and a video webcast, both of which can be accessed at www.usmmasports.com.
