Vince Giambanco joined the Unites States Merchant Marine Academy as an assistant coach for the Cross Country and Track & Field in the January of 2012, bringing strong experience as a coach and counselor.
In 2012 he helped guide both the men’s and women’s teams to Academy Records in the 4x1500m relay. He also guided Tomas Sanchez who lowered his personal best 800m time from 1:59 to an ECAC qualifying time of 1:54.2. Further, Sanchez was Landmark Conference Champion in the 400m both indoors and outdoors. Giambanco also directed FR Ellie Coulter to an Academy Record in the 10,000m.
In addition to his coaching duties at USMMA, Giambanco is also founder and Head Coach of Citius New York, an Elite Development Racing Team based out of Long Island New York. Citius has established itself as the best racing team on Long Island having four male runners with 5k personal bests between 13:42 and 14:23, as well as a strong middle distance contingent including Dustin Emrani who qualified for the 2012 IAAF Indoor World Championship and has run a personal best of 1:46 in the 800m and 4:03 in the Mile. The Citius women are equally as strong, with its lead runners Jodie Robertson who has ran a 2:43 at the United States Olympic Marathon Trials and also boasts a 16:36 5k personal best and Karen Roa who has run personal bests of 4:55 Mile, 9:40 3k, 10:26 3000m Steeplechase, and 16:50 5k.
Giambanco first gained experience coaching the collegiate ranks as a Cross Country assistantfor C.W. Post University. In just one year on staff, four athletes under his direction earned All-East Coast Conference 1st Team honors and three other were named All-East Coast Conference 2nd Team. On the men’s side, his 1st Team All-ECC runners achieved notable marks (Mathew O’Keefe – 25:16, Christian Altamura – 25:39 and Raymond Coyle – 26:10). He also guided female 1st-teamer Jennifer Mclaughlin to a personal best of 19:21 in the 5K and 2nd-teamer Caitlin Smith to a mark of 19:09. Both the men’s and women’s team ended the season as champions of the East Coast Conference in 2011.
Giambanco began his own collegiate running career competing at the University of Miami from 2006-2009 where he received the NCAA All-Academic Award and graduated with a B.S. in Sports Administration, minoring in Exercise Physiology. He used his remaining eligibility for C.W. Post while working on a M.S. in School Counseling. He captained the Pioneers while earning the distinction of First-Team All-ECC Conference and led the men’s team to back to back ECC Championships in 2009 & 2010.
Originally from Oyster Bay, New York, Giambanco is a Certified Personal Trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine and a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach.
