KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 10, 2018) – On Friday, USMMA sixth-year head cross country coach David Lawrence Jr. unveiled the schedule for the Mariners' upcoming 2018 campaign for both the men's and women's squads. Merchant Marine will compete in a total of seven races throughout the first two-plus months of the season, including the Skyline Championship Meet, to prepare for three postseason races in November.
The year begins later this month on Friday, Aug. 31, when the Mariners travel out to Sayville, N.Y., to the Broadway Avenue Park to compete in Skyline opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island's Fourth Annual Friends and Alumni Meet.
Action in September opens with another Skyline opponent's meet, the Purchase Invitational on the campus course at Purchase College on Saturday, Sept. 8. At that meet, USMMA will go head-to-head against arch-rival Coast Guard with two points in the standings of the Superintendents' Trophy on the line (one for the men's race and one for the women's).
The month continues with the NYIT Invitational on the campus of NYIT in nearby Old Westbury, N.Y., on Saturday, Sept. 15, followed by the Queensborough Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., the very next day, Sunday, Sept. 16.
Back-to-back meets hosted by Skyline schools are up next, as the Mariners will travel up to Milton, N.Y., at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome for the Mount St. Mary Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29, before making the trip out to Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, N.Y. for the 19th Annual St. Joseph's-L.I. Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The 2018 Skyline Conference Championship Meet is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25, back up at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome. The rain date for that event will be Sunday, Oct. 28.
The three postseason meets in November are the ECAC Championships, again at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome, on Saturday, Nov. 3, followed by the NCAA Atlantic Regional Meet, hosted by Rowan University at the Gloucester County DREAM Park in Logan Township, N.J., on Saturday. Nov. 10. Should a Mariner runner qualify for the NCAA National Championship Meet, that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis., hosted by UW-Oshkosh.
