Another first-place showing for the men

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – For the second consecutive week, the Kings Point men's cross country team came up another impressive showing. This time the Mariners finished first ahead of the field of Division III and community college teams at the C.W. Post Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

In fact, not only did the Mariners defeat their Division III rivals, they prevailed over several Division II schools, including Pace University, the University of Bridgeport and the University of the District of Columbia on a perfect day for running. A total of 14 teams, which included Division I schools as such Fordham University, competed in the 8K race.

"Our men are significantly ahead of last year's squad," Merchant Marine head coach Gregory Lott said. "Four men broke the 29-minute barrier and our top nine runners were all under 30 minutes. We're showing a lot of depth as a team and they're moving in the right direction. It's very exciting to see such a great improvement.

"Sophomore Sam Sanford was a great surprise today shooting up the team ladder running No. 4 for us with a monster personal record."

Sanford (28:56) was one of four Kings Point runners who broke the 29-minute barrier.

Freshman David McGowan led the Mariners at 28:24. He was closely followed by senior Logan Swan (28:26) and freshman Alex Megeff (28:51). Also achieving good times were freshman Nicolas Walsh (29:03) and sophomore Nathan Rogers (29:11).

The Mariners, who will have next week off, will compete at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday, Sept. 30.
