Freshmen men impressive at opening cross country meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. – David McGowan led four freshmen who finished in the top seven for Kings Point in its opening cross country meet of the season at the West Point Open on Saturday.

McGowan was clocked in 17:12 over five kilometers over the West Point Golf Course.

The opponents included Division I powers West Point and Manhattan College , Ramapo College and Monroe College from Division III and the U.S. Military Academy Prep.

The Mariners ran on a mountainous course at the U.S. Military Academy, the most difficult course they will compete on this season.

"I'm very pleased with the way the men started the season,"  Kings Point coach Gregory Lott said. "We have been training at such a hard level that the team had very little in the tank from which to pull. Their performance showed a lot of toughness. They have me excited for the season."

The Mariners will compete at the Purchase College Invitational in Purchase, N.Y. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
