NEW YORK (Feb. 1, 2019) – The USMMA men's track & field team competed at the NYC DIII Invitational on Friday at the Armory in Manhattan. The Mariners came in 21st place out of the 27 teams that scored at the event with a total of 11 team points.
The highlight of the day for Merchant Marine was senior David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) hitting an ECAC mark in the weight throw with a toss of 15.34m (50' 4"), which was good for fourth place and five team points. With that mark, he joins sophomore teammate Ivan Goretoy (West Warwick, R.I.) in qualifying for the ECAC Championships in March. Goretoy hit the ECAC qualifying standard in the weight throw back in January.
Goretoy finished in third place in the weight throw with a toss of 15.43m (50' 7.5"). That earned six points towards the Mariners' team score.
The Mariners had two more top-20 finishes at the event. Goretoy came in 10th in the shot put with a mark of 12.61m (41' 4.5") and senior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) came in 20th in the 200 meter run with a time of 23.71.
The Mariners are right back at it tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 2, when they travel out to East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania for ESU's DeSchriver Invitational. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. at the Warriors' Zimbar Gym. Live results for the meet will be available at this link.
