Mariners Come In Second Place In Inaugural Skyline Outdoor Championship Meet

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 29, 2018) – The USMMA men's track & field team took part in the inaugural Skyline Conference Outdoor Championship Meet on Sunday, hosted by Farmingdale State College. The Mariners came in second place at the event with a total of 166 points. The host FSC Rams won the Skyline crown with 227.5 points. 

Merchant Marine had a total of five first-place finishes at the event, as senior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.) claimed three of them – the 800 meter run (2:02.20), the 1500 meter run (4:16.23) and the 5000 meter run (16:08.92). Freshman Ivan Goretoy (West Warwick, R.I.) had the other two, as he won the shot put [13.50m (44-03.50)] and the discus [42.03m (137-11)]. 

Other big news on the day was senior Austin Haire (Ignacio, Colo.) hitting an ECAC Qualifying Mark with a second-place finish in the discus with a mark of 40.05 meters (131-05). That was one of six total second-place finishes for the Mariners. The other five are listed below.

  • Sophomore Jeff Attardi (Cedar Run, N.J.) in the 3000m Steeplechase (11:35.89)
  • Sophomore Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) in the 1500m Run (4:17.66)
  • Goretoy in the Hammer Throw [47.44m (155-08)]
  • Senior Ian Stoner (Glen Allen, Va.) in the Shot Put [13.43m (44-00.75)]
  • and senior Tyler Hartman (St. George, Utah) in the Javelin [42.77m (140-04)]

The ECAC Championship Meet is scheduled for May 16-17 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Six Mariners qualified for the ECACs throughout the season – MacElrevey, Haire, Goretoy, Stoner, and juniors David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.).
