SWARTHMORE, Pa. – On Saturday, the United States Merchant Marine Academy men's outdoor track & field squad competed at a very high caliber "Last Chance Meet" at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. The meet consisted of athletes from Divisions I, II and III trying to hit qualifying marks for the ECAC and national championships. Various post-collegiate athletes also took part in the competition.
The men's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Hunter Karass, Tyler McDaniel, Brandon Barrett and Mickel McGann had a huge drop in time running the race in 43.57 seconds, coming in second overall at the meet. This ECAC championship-qualifying time was a mere .18 seconds off the Academy record.
The men's 4 x 400 meter relay foursome dropped nearly three seconds off its season's best mark. The team of Kevin Young, Karass, Thomas Routt and Barrett ran to a seventh-place finish at the meet in a time of 3:27.64.
The top individual performance of the day was freshman Dustin Beck in the javelin throw. Beck added nearly a full meter improvement on his season's best mark with a throw of 51.20 meters, which was good for third place overall.
In the men's open 400-meter, Barrett and Young had great showings. Barrett ran a 51.35, his second-best performance of the season, and Young ran a new personal record of 52.04.
"Nearly every competing member of our squad performed at their peak with a season's best or personal best effort. It was really great seeing our relays come together with such fast times. The relays showed the synergistic aspect of our team; they worked hard as a group throughout the year and ran their best together. I'm very proud of our squad," Head Coach Gregory Lott commented after the meet.
The Kings Point men's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Karass, McDaniel, Barrett and McGann will travel to Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday, May 20, to compete in the 2011 ECAC Outdoor Championships.
